MISTAKEN REJECTION
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:12:42 PM »
Hey guys, has this happened to you?  Perhaps I shot myself in the foot, but I don't care.  This was just sloppiness.  I submitted a query:

Subject: QUERY: J.L. STERMER - A SCOUNDREL'S TALE - COMMERCIAL FICTION (SMART HUMOR)

 Dear Ms. Stermer,

I read with interest that you are looking for smart humor.  I believe A SCOUNDREL'S TALE is just that.  (blah blah)

Dear Jane: (My name's NOT Jane.)

Thanks for your query letter. I appreciate your patience while I’ve considered your work as it’s taken much longer than I’d like to get back to you.

As to Ode to My Earwax, I’m afraid I must pass. I need to be really jazzed about a project to take it on and give it my all and I don’t think this is a good match for me. Also, my responsibilities at the agency, as well as my growing client list keep me quite busy, so I have to be very selective when taking on a project.

Thanks so much for thinking of me and please accept my best wishes for your project’s success.

Sincerely,
J.L. Stermer

Hopefully, this rejection was intended for someone else - someone named Jane whose MS is entitled Ode to My Earwax.  Is this a joke?

Haha whoops!  If it weren't a joke, it'd be kind of funny.

Just read on Nathan Bransford's blog that Ode to My Earwax has been optioned by New Line Cinema and is in advanced track pre-production - with Nora Ephrom at the helm and starring Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick (it didn't mention which star suffers from the waxy ear syndrome, but I'm guessing Meg).

Sorry, august, you'll have to huddle in the think tank for another title.  Would Ode to My Navel Lint work, or is that too cliched?

Haven't gotten a legit rejection yet, but I'm pretty certain it's a-comin'.

Navel lint? Never work... And mine's got no place for any Meg Ryan. It's a heart-wrenching tale of a man and his Q-tip. Ode to My Earwax is the only title that fits. Though, by the time I finish mine, people will have long forgotten Ms. Ryan's performance in this thing. Let's be honest, she doesn't have the lobes for it.  :wag:

August, I think you should just change it so it's "OWED TO EARWAX" and you could slant it to all the benefits the MC has developed by having clean ears.

I believe one cannot copyright a title, but you may still get grief if you insist upon using Ode To My Earwax, august.      Could you possibly put a sci-fi slant on it and retitle it Ode to My Earwig?  And we're talking tiny insects here, not micro wigs for bald ears.  Why am I picturing your MC singing into a very large Q-tip as though it's a microphone and he's doing that Risky Business scene - "Just put that old earwax on the shelf..."

Speaking of two books sharing a title, there's someone on Authonomy who's titled his book, 1984. Seriously.

Reminds me of a Monty Python sketch where they spoke of Nicholas Nickkleby - with two ks - not to be confused with Charles Dickens' (with one 'k').  So silly - this 1984 person, not Python -they intended to be silly.
