If one of your top choices rejected your query, but then you got an offer from a publisher, would you requery them to say "I have a publisher interested, would you want to rep me?"  This hasnt happened to me but I just wondered what you guys would do.

Hell yeah.

I mean, not NOW. But I would have. What's the worst that can happen--your dream agent is hardly going to hop on a plane, buy a brick bat, and come to your door to whap you in the head. You'll just get a no.

I had one agent who said, "I love this so much, but I can't think of where to sell it."  If I'd gotten an offer, then I could have returned to her with, "You love this so much, and I have a place that wants to buy it. Problem solved."

I definitely would contact that agent but I would phrase it differently.

I've received an offer from Big Publisher for my ms The Most Amazing Story Ever. I feel it would be prudent to have an agent represent me. Would you be interested in reading the ms? My query is below.

Or something to that effect.

 :)

Violet, would you include "my previously rejected ms from your agency" or something like that?  I mean someone who not only rejected the query, but also the partial or full.

No. Unless they stated something like in Tabris's case--that they loved it but didn't know how to sell it.

If they passed, it means they were never interested in my work to begin with.

Exactly.  It's like calling up an ex-boyfriend after you've won the lottery.

Not necessarily. If they passed, it might mean the screener screened it out for reasons that are now made irrelevant because you have an offer.

Good point, tab.  Maybe you could query and say "you previously passed on the partial but perhaps it never made it to your desk"

If it was an uber agent, then yes I would. Rejections aren't personal - they're just part of doing business. I know enough to know that I couldn't make it without an experienced agent, so I'd just suck it up and ask.
