Submission Guidelines
It will take me about 8-12 weeks to get to your material.
Submit your material as an attachment in Word.docx. Please remember I get A LOT of material to read, so name the file(s) "YourLastname"--"manuscript keyword".doc. (.e.g., Smith-Balloon.doc)
For a Work of Fiction:
* Include a short narrative synopsis detailing the beginning, middle, and end of your story and the first 30-40 pages; and a narrative bio focusing on your expertise and your writing.
For a Work of Non-Fiction:
* Think about 4 questions that need to be addressed: Why this book; why now; why am I the best person to write it; and what will I do practically to market and sell the book
* Included a half-page -- 1 page overview of the book (an in-a-nutshell description, in effect); a table of contents listing each chapter and chapter title and sub-title; a one page or so expansion of each chapter of the Table of Contents, describing the contents of each chapter in more detail; a sample chapter or two. Bear in mind that an editor who can not see a completed manuscript wants at least to have a clear idea of the book he or she is buying and the style it will be written in. The more you can make their life easier, the better;
In General:
* Include a half-page narrative biography of yourself that emphasizes your expertise, if writing nonfiction, and in general emphasizes and lists any writing credits, publishing history, sales figures, etc., and enclose copies (if any) of reviews or quotations, PR material, etc;
* Because we ask for electronic submissions space your manuscript at 1.15, unjustified (ragged right margin) using a Times Roman or Arial font.
* Included your name, address, and telephone number on the title page, and a catchall name for the manuscript and continuous numbering on all pages;
And now for some shameless (if helpful) promotion . . .
If you don't know how to write a book proposal check out our website for some suggestions: www.fineprintlit.com. There is a page you can download that details what a book proposal should be and why. I also have some suggestions on proposals in The Elements of Narrative Nonfiction: How to Write and Sell the Novel of True Events (Quill Driver Books).
Thank you for thinking of us.
