Send a Query to Renee Runge at Spencerhill Associates
I'm honored that you've chosen to share your work with me; as a writer myself, I know the vulnerability and emotion that comes with allowing someone else into a world that up until now has maybe only been seen by you and a select few others. I hope that upon submission, you are able to breathe a little sigh of relief knowing you did it, your query is out there! I'm excited to read what you have in store for me, simply because you decided I should be someone who sees it.
Due to bandwidth, I am only able to take on the projects that resonate with me most, but I hope to be an uplifting presence in the industry regardless of the outcome of your query.
PLEASE READ ALL BEFORE SENDING SUBMISSION:
Please familiarize yourself with the kinds of projects I am looking for. You can find a comprehensive list on my official Manuscript Wish List page.
I am probably not the best fit for: retellings of fairy tales / mythology / the classics (NEW literary traditions do strongly appeal to me), heavily romance-driven fantasy, or novels-in-verse. I have very few “absolutely nots” for my inbox, but I really do not want to see any works featuring death of companion animals, anything that actively harms / contributes to stereotypes against a group of people, or anything produced with or pro-AI.
Some agents would like for you to update them on any full requests from other agents or new awards at literary contests. I am not one of those agents. Please only update me if you have received an offer of representation, or if an editor has expressed interest in seeing your manuscript once you are agented. Pitch contest likes count! Please allow 6 months before you message me asking for an update on your query / confirmation of receipt.
AUTO PASSES:
- You've submitted a draft... your manuscript should be what you consider "done" and polished
- Word count outside of genre expectations or age group. (I have a filter that automatically checks for this, but my high end is 120k for YA because I'm okay with editing down a bit)
- You don't tell me what's at stake for your main character in your pitch
- You're resubmitting a project that has been previously rejected by me, but has clearly not undergone any significant revision (same exact word count, only a few weeks later, etc.)
NOTE ABOUT AGENCY: A response from one agent is a response from all, so choose wisely. You can only query one of us. We have recently noticed an uptick in authors submitting the same work to a different agent at Spencerhill following a rejection from someone else with the agency. Please do not do this. The Spencerhill Team passes along queries to our colleagues if we feel it might be their cup of tea.
