This is the first time I have been prevented from querying because of word count.
My adult fantasy has been trimmed to the bone. Losing another 18,000 words will gut the story and the voice.
Is this a common occurrence on QueryTracker?
Query Not Accepted
Sorry, your specified word count of 118,000 words is larger than the accepted standard for the genre stated.
Before your query can be submitted, please edit your book to reduce the word count so it is below 100,000 words.
AI Overview
For a 2025 debut adult fantasy novel, aim for
90,000 to 120,000 words, with 100,000-115,000 being a sweet spot, but be cautious over 120k unless extraordinary; epic fantasy allows more (110k-120k+), while romantasy leans 90k-110k.
