Tips From the Agent
We do accept e-mail submissions but only from authors recommended to us by people we know (usually other authors, sometimes editors). Our reporting time is usually a week or less for a proposal, three or four weeks for a complete manuscript.

So -- are they open for queries but not full manuscript submissions? Or closed for both?

Got it to Kate through a friend of a friend (network, people!) Nice response, and she appears to have actually read it!

Dear Paul,

I've just finished reading NORTH BY SOUTH, which [a friend] sent to me. It's such an immense story, and obviously very carefully constructed. Looking at this time in American history from a human rather than purely historical perspective is an intriguing idea, but I couldn't quite connect with these characters. In the end I'm not enthusiastic enough about the book to be the right agent for it, but thanks very much for letting me take a look, and I'm so grateful to Vani for making the recommendation!

All best wishes,

Kate Johnson
