5/15/22 - Email Query - query letter only
78K - YA Contemporary Romance

5/18/22 - Email Rejection
Thanks for your query, but I'm afraid this doesn't sound like a fit for me. The YA market is really challenging right now and, though this sounds like a good read, I'm not sure there's enough of a unique hook here to stand out from similar stories already on the market/editors' desks. I'm hopeful another agent sees it differently, but I'm going to step aside. I appreciate the opportunity and wish you the best with this project.

aethera, I got the same response. It seems like that's part of the form response, but it really threw me

My plot/subplot combination (as far as I’ve always known, subplots don’t go in the query) aren’t unique. Thanks.

Very helpful email rejection.

"Thanks for your query. It sounds like you have quite a story, but unfortunately, memoir is really difficult to place unless the author has a significant platform and/or really unique approach topic. I'm not confident I'd have luck with this so I'm afraid I'm going to pass. I appreciate the opportunity and wish you the best with this project. "

Personalized, saying her taste in MG is narrow and reps more in upper MG - kind and encouraging response.

Rejected 4/28/22. I appreciate the prompt and courteous reply. A classy lady!

Thanks for your query, but unfortunately, I don't think this is a fit for me. While I enjoy reading stories like this, they're a tad out of my wheelhouse as an agent (I've tried multiple times to revise my QT listing to reflect that, to no avail). I'm sorry not to have better news, but I'm going to step aside. I appreciate the opportunity and wish you the best with this project.

Best,
Jen

Subbed query only, immediate request for 10 pages. Overnight request for 50 pages. A week later she sent a long (for an agent) email with some praise for the subject and my writing, but with detailed feedback as to why she was rejecting. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely sub to her again (but I hope I don't have to).

jessieguapel, Yes, just query, no pages. All the partial requests you see are for 10 pages.

For clarity's sake, does Jen want you to send your initial query with JUST your letter, no pages?

Literary 54K. I know that other agents take novels at this length, but it is definitely on the short side. I appreciate her honest and helpful reply. More than you get from most agents, especially for just a query.

Thanks for your query. This is an interesting concept, but I'm not sure it feels as developed as it could be. At 54k words, its a good bit shorter than category convention and these chapters feel more like vignettes than fully fleshed out scenes. I'm hopeful another agent feels differently, but I'm going to pass. I appreciate the opportunity to have considered your work and wish you the best with this project.
