Query Guidelines

Put 'query' in the subject line. Your query should include: a brief summary of your book, word count, genre, any relevant publishing experience, and the first 5 pages of your manuscript pasted into the body of the email. (NO attachments - we will not open these.) Due to the volume of submissions, we are unable to respond to all queries. If it appears we might make a good match, we will ask you for more material.

Leave comments about your experiences with this literary agent, or read what other authors have to say.

Can we not deride an agent who responds promptly? The courtesy to respond, in itself, shows professionalism. Are we all that desperate for insincere, pre-written platitudes? I'm confident that many agents who adhere to the "no response means no" policy have read this type of silly criticism and decided that responding isn't worth the time. What more actually needs to be said? It's not for them. Good enough for me. Onward for all parties.

I received the same - "Not for us, thanks." I understand being inundated, but a polite form letter would at least show a bit more kindness and respect for writers who've poured their hearts into their queries, not to mention their books. Thanks all for sharing. At least I know I'm in good company. :)

Honestly, I know many of us think, "Oh, at least it's a response!" but it's not the response that's enough. Any agent/agency that responds with "Not for us, thanks" or "Just not for me" and that's it - it says a lot about their lack of professionalism. It's a red flag to me. A real professional agent/agency is better than that. And we all deserve better.

Not the kindest response, but not ignored, at least.

"Not for us, thanks."

Ok, I understand that literary agents don't have a lot of time. I understand they are busy, but this choice of 'form letter' is a little irritating. Anyways, at least there was a quick response.

Incredibly rude and likely incompetent agent. Don't even bother.
