Query Guidelines

Put 'query' in the subject line. Your query should include: a brief summary of your book, word count, genre, any relevant publishing experience, and the first 5 pages of your manuscript pasted into the body of the email. (NO attachments - we will not open these.) Due to the volume of submissions, we are unable to respond to all queries. If it appears we might make a good match, we will ask you for more material.

Leave comments about your experiences with this literary agent, or read what other authors have to say.

Then you wonder why agents don't respond at all! Be thankful when they do. They're busy and get a pile of queries. There is a lot of competition.

Reply was fairly prompt (3 weeks) but also dismissive - "Not for us, thanks."

Oh no, what response did you get?

Yesterday from another agent I got "I’m going to pass on this one because I found it didn’t spark my interest". Pretty harsh I thought! I comforted myself with the fact that this same agent has herself written a book which I found on Amazon, and reading the first few pages didn't spark MY interest at all either.

Anyway, I feel for you. Jeez, why do we put ourselves through this? I keep thinking there has to be a better way. Maybe self-pubbing will be the norm at some point in the future.

I would have preferred "not for us". I received a pretty cold response, I thought.

Looking at what everyone else got, I guess mine was kind and personalized. She said I'm a good writer but that she wasn't convinced the hero of my story is "known enough" to carry a novel. Then she simply ended it with "sorry." Hardly a touchy-feely note, but it was a quick response and she did provide a reason, so I'm not complaining.
