I queried him on a 63K horror novel on 5/17/22. Got a reply on 6/3/22 stating that editors typically want a word count of at least 75K, but that he would read the full manuscript if I was willing to do a re-write and grow the word count. Couldn't say no to that. He strikes me as an agent who would be involved throughout the process, which is exactly what I'm looking for.

Sent email query to Ian Shea on May 19, received rejection on June 6. He said he could not represent my book because I self-published it in April. He said that even though I own the rights and can remove it from Amazon at any time, publishers rarely consider such books. I guess you have to spend a year querying all the agents on your list, and then self-publish it when no one is interested in representing it. No complaints about this agent; he was cordial and professional.

Email query 5/1/22 paranormal suspense
Personalized rejection 5/23/22--although I don't have a cliffhanger, something made him think I did & he doesn't care for them.

Hey, lizardesque.

Agreed. The system is deeply-flawed and gifted, talented writers with sharp minds brimming with things to share don't make the connection anywhere near as often as they should. Women's fiction with speculative elements sounds absolutely kick-ass. Keep moving forward with your ideas and unique skill set, whatever form that will take for you. Don't let this harrowing series of fire-breathing hurdles break your stride.

Query Sent: 4/28/22 @ 1 pm
MS Type: Adult Contemporary 116K Words
Rejection Received: 4/29/22 @ 7:22 am

"Thank you for your email. I'm not comfortable taking on a project that deals with mass shootings so I'm going to have to pass. I wish you luck in your publishing journey."

I'm not sure if he actually read the submitted pages or simply read the query letter. If he had read the submitted pages, he might have understood the shooting is only a very small but important part of the story that propels the protagonist on his journey.

Rejection (R&R?): 4/22
Ian was kind enough to offer a couple of paragraphs about why he passed. One large note, basically. He offered to take another look if I decide to make changes along those lines, but not a formal R&R with timeline/exclusivity or anything. Nice dude!
