Query Guidelines

Irene prefers a particular format to queries. First, paste in the first ten pages of the manuscript. After that, include the synopsis. And finally, at the bottom, include the query letter.

A little history: I did Irene's Historical Fiction WD Webinar back in Jan 2017 with first pages, query critique, plus synopsis. She knew the novel wasn't finished, but asked me to send in the complete once it was. I dithered whether to query or not, since it had been nine months, but in the end I decided to go ahead, including our e-mail trail. So I'm noting it as a Full Request!

Fulfilling PR from SiWC 2016

Was hoping for an ER, since I just saw her in Oct.

ER: Aug 10
Had marked CNR months ago, but was grateful to receive a personalized note with feedback: "This has a good premise, but the writing is not grabbing me. I'm not feeling as involved with it as I should and I am often confused because the world is not entirely clear to me. I'm afraid I'll have to pass, but thanks for the look."

Fulfilling PR from HNS conference June 25 in which she requested material after I pitched to her.

ER: 7/18 (exactly 3 weeks)
A very nice email indicating that she read my piece "with interest" but felt it was leading to a mystery story, and then it did not (rather strange feedback, IMO, since my genre is HF and not mystery - and my query stated this.) Nonetheless, I was very grateful for a response and her time.

YA Contemporary - Pitched in person at a conference.
Worst rejection I've ever gotten. Pretty brutal, even for a seasoned writer.
To be fair, the event switched my pitch to her and I knew before hand that it was not a good fit. I should not have pitched. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH and listen to your gut. She fabulous, but she's not for everyone.

Here's an alternative to sending a query: If you write women's fiction, you might want to submit to the 27th Free Writer's Digest "Dear Lucky Agent" Contest, which Ms. Goodman is judging in the hopes of finding a new client. Deadline is Nov. 25, 2016. Here's the link: http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents/27th-free-dear-lucky-agent-contest-womens-fiction#.WCc99eLUd0A.twitter
