Accepts Queries Via...

Snail-Mail: No

E-Mail: Yes

Online Form: No

Always verify agent's information before sending your query. Verify the agent's query preferences, contact information, genres of interest, and if the agent is still open to queries.

Although QueryTracker tries to stay current, it is not always easy. Never trust any single source for agent information (and yes, this includes QueryTracker).

Review the user comments for more information, and always follow exactly what it says on the agent's website.

And NEVER give money to an "agent".

Leave comments about your experiences with this literary agent, or read what other authors have to say.

Apparently his agency is looking only for Canadian authors.

Great, thank you so much, phyllo and MystWriter, for your feedback. Yes, I'll be honest and mention that other agents are already looking at my work.

monolithis - great problem to have. I agree 100% with phyllo - I would only want to define "brief" - i.e. 30 days etc. His idea of brief might not be your idea of brief.

@monolithis: That's awesome! Congrats! One possible approach is to inform the requesting agent that the MS is already out with five other agents (always be honest), but that you are eager to work with Westwood and willing not to pursue any further submissions for the brief period of time they're seeking. I did this once and it created no problems (didn't get taken on by the agent, but still ... )

Best of luck and let us know what happens!

I got an email response: Could I have a brief exclusive?

What does that mean? I have already responded to five other requests for full from other agents. Quandary. Any comments/advice?

"Dear Author,

Thank you for allowing us to consider your manuscript. Your submission has now been reviewed and unfortunately did not find a fit with any of our agents. Due to the time commitment and long term nature of the agent/author relationship, an agent needs to feel committed and enthralled with the work they are representing in order to do the best possible job of selling the manuscript to publishers. Although it seems very promising, your manuscript didn’t resonate with our agents in the necessary way.

Thank you for your patience.

Please accept our best wishes for the successful placement of your work.
Best regards,

The Editorial Board

I noticed there were comments regarding other agents at Westwood and for this reason, I thought I'd throw in my two cents:

I sent a query to Carolyn Forde on June 19th.
On June 20th, she requested my full manuscript.

I believe Ms. Forde took some vacation time and I'm awaiting her response.
However, I think it's noteworthy that during this time I won a free critique through a contest on Twitter. Since I didn't want to make any sort of moves without consulting her, I tweeted her a question about her position and/or any potential objections she might have. She responded in under a minute that I should definitely go ahead.

Both Ms. Forde and Jake Babad (administrative assistant) have demonstrated the 3 Ps - they're professional, prompt and personable. I believe any author would feel incredibly fortunate to obtain representation with this reputable agency.

Hilary is a class act. I interacted with her a bit in a panel she did at Words in 3D in Edmonton, and mentioned it in my query letter. She seemed open to historicals, and I had specifically mentioned fictional biographies, my particular niche.

Unfortunately, still a no, but I think anyone would be lucky to snag her.

"Thanks for the feedback and for trying me with your novel. I did read this with interest, because I think you've picked an intriguing time and place to set the story. After careful thought, this one comes close for me but I didn't fall in love quite enough to take it on in this very difficult market. Perhaps I felt there was a tendency towards a bit too much 'telling' as opposed to 'showing,' which is a common refrain presented to writers early in their careers. Of course this is just one subjective opinion - you have a really interesting idea and I do hope that you'll try elsewhere. "

Supernatural thriller/horror
This is the kind of rejection I like!
"You wrote an excellent cover letter! I took a quick look at the material though and I'm afraid that I have to decline - it's getting so difficult to sell fiction these days that unless I respond with incredible enthusiasm immediately I need to pass, and this is more commercially skewed which makes it difficult for me to take on here in Canada. Thanks for thinking of me and best of luck elsewhere."

Some of their clients include legendary television journalist Robert MacNeill and the novelist Yann Martel. The senior agents aren't seeking new clients, but the younger ones are. One of the agents is based out of Vancouver, BC.
