setterby that's very true. It's impossible to really know what the author and agent discussed. If the author wanted Sara to pitch to Riptide then that's also on the author. but I don't know, In all honesty I don't know everything about every single publisher out there and I've been researching this industry for near seven years now. I don't know what Sara or the author knows about riptide, this is the first I'm hearing of it and I'm very glad you've shared the information. I absolutely will steer clear of them but maybe the author or the agent doesn't know, or perhaps don't know the whole story.

But either way I'm very glad to know the information on Riptide now and I know that if I do get an agent that I'll be telling them never to pitch my work to Riptide.

Thornbird, of course the author could've turned down that offer, but I'm willing to bet lots of authors, especially new authors, don't know about Riptide's history. And Riptide's problems probably won't come up in a Google search unless you know exactly what to look for. I know about them because I've been around a while (I'm an indie author of queer romance). Sara has been around even longer than me. She knows, or should know, about Riptide's many issues with racism and sexual harassment (including sexual harassment of authors writing for them). Who knows, maybe she warned her author about them and they were fine with it. But personally, if I were an agent, I would steer my authors away from Riptide and any other publisher with practices like theirs.

setterby thanks for sharing that, it's very insightful. But at the end of the day, it's the author who accepted the offer they got from Riptide, not the agent. Sara's job is to pitch the book to publishers and if said publishers make an offer then Sara relays that to the author and it's up to the author whether they accept the offer of publication. If the author didn't want their book to be published by Riptide then Sara would not have sold their book to them.

I was on the fence about querying Sara but decided against it when I saw she recently sold a book to Riptide. If you want to know why that is a problem, see here:

I had previously emailed Sara about a month ago on a separate story, but now i am trying a new one, a sci fi romantic comedy
Sci fi romantic comedy 125k words
Partial request for fifty pages on June 29, 2021, ten days later
Discovered a mistake i made with the pages, sent over the correct ones today on July 2, hopefully she doesn't toss it out. UPDATE: after her emailing me back, i sent a fresh email with the correct pages. She was super understanding about it and handled it like a champ.
Rejection on July 20, 2021. I will say that i am thankful for her sticking out with all the mishaps and accepting me a second time after my first book. 10/10, would reccomend

Follow-up comments: I emailed a “Thank You” note to agent, although some sites advise against this. I received a very encouraging reply back so I thought that was an incredibly nice thing to do. Not many agents would make the extra effort to do this.

Did not accept. It's my first denial! In a way, I'm excited about that. Is that normal?
At least I have begun my journey, yes?
