Form rejection, but honestly it's the nicest form rejection I've received: "Thanks for contacting me about your work. Unfortunately, I don't think it's quite a fit for me as an agent. However, I'd encourage you to contact other agents about your project, as it's often just a matter of showing the material to enough people before you connect with someone who'll be excited to represent it on your behalf. And of course, I wish you all the best of success with your work going forward."

Rejection 2/13, with apologies for the delay. He liked the main character but the manuscript was too YA for him. (Er. It does?)

"Also, just to let you know, I'll be out of the office on a short vacation from Oct 25th - Nov 3rd, and it may be a few weeks before I'm able to sit down with the ms. But if that's okay on your end, feel free to send away."

That's a nice change from the usual multi-month stony wall of silence.

At 9 p.m. last night I emailed David Fugate of Launchbooks Literary Agency about not being able to get a literary agent to read any of my novels. I explained that although I have a website, only a few relatives and friends know my stories exist, and I have virtually no social media following. The subject of my email was “Pre-query… maybe.” It was my first email to David and I really didn’t expect a response. At 9 a.m. this morning, I was pleasantly shocked to get a very comprehensive, seven-paragraph answer with thoughtful suggestions. It was written as if he were trying to help a friend… and he doesn’t even know me. He’s a special guy, and I’m sure the author of The Martian will agree that David is a very special literary agent.

83K urban fantasy. I sent three chapters, but either he didn't care to read them or he didn't like them.
