Query Guidelines

From the agent: Dear Author, I periodically read the comments section on QueryTracker to make sure that my team is responsive to your queries. It is very important to me that every query is responded to in a timely way, within days whenever possible. And that if a manuscript is requested, that we read it and give you feedback within a month. I do not use interns to read queries, but one of my in-house agents as well as an editorial person. Every query is read by someone with at least five years professional experience in trade publishing. While I understand that there can be frustration with a quick response, I demand that of my staff out of respect for your time and efforts. I absolutely use a form rejection (one that I crafted years ago to respectfully decline materials) and also have a form rejection for manuscripts where I recognize that I just don't get the book. A more personal rejection will follow with projects that touched me but may not be quite ready, and where I do have some ideas to share. Recognizing that this is all very subjective is also important. You must have faith in your work and talent in the face of multiple rejections until you find that one very smart agent and editor, that get you. I have declined the work of a number of bestselling authors and will, I am sure, do so again. The point is to keep writing, and know that we all at VS&A are honored by you and the invitation to review your work. Kind regards, VS Victoria Sanders & Associates, LLC

ER 4/20/18 (deservedly so) Form

Thank you for considering Victoria Sanders & Associates as a potential
agency to represent your work. We have reviewed the material you sent
and we regret that we will not be offering to review your work further
at this time. Please know that we are very selective with the
materials that we request. We encourage you to keep writing and we
wish you every success. Please forgive this impersonal note. We
receive a tremendous number of queries and are forced to focus our
attention on a limited number of projects.

Kind regards,
Victoria Sanders

We were all so taken with your
inviting voice and your endearing cast of characters. But while you
have a terrific and promising project here, it simply does not feel
like quite the right for VSA. So after very careful consideration, I
regret to inform you that I will not be offering to represent your
manuscript at this time. Perhaps we are not the right agents for this
one, and others will feel differently. As I am sure you are aware,
finding an agent that shares your vision as a writer is extremely
important. It takes a strong network of unique but like-minded
individuals to continually find a proper match. I encourage you to
continue your search for an agent who is the right fit for you. Thank
you again for sharing your work with me, and I wish you every success.

I wish I could have gotten more feedback as to what was specifically not a right fit for her. Oh well.

Offer of Representation: 01/19/18

Note: First, the timeline above isn't as condensed as it may seem. I have a history with VS&A and this manuscript; they have seen earlier drafts and--while not specifically requesting R&R's--they had always offered to look at future drafts. I just got off the phone with Victoria, and I am THRILLED with this offer. I have another offer of rep on the table, but honestly, I cannot imagine turning down Victoria Sanders after this conversation. She was passionate, enthusiastic, and I would have complete confidence in her to help make the book the best it could be.

Update (01/29/2018): I'm surprised to be saying this, but I've ultimately decided to pass on this wonderful offer from Victoria Sanders. I struggled with this decision greatly. I ended up with a third offer, and while I'm excited to accept that offer, it is very difficult for me to not accept representation from VS&A. For people interested in submitting to Victoria, rest assured that she is wonderful, and VS&A is world-class. Her clients are so very lucky to have her!
