Semi-personalized, but way too ambiguous, subjective, and presumptuous. She read only 10 pages but acted like she read the whole thing by saying something that was contradictive and nowhere near what other agents have ever said. She doesn't give any editorial critiques to support her opinion, showed no indication of being the right agent for this, she clearly didn't connect to or show passion for this book in any way, and yet expects me to send her a revised version one day if I don't get an agent with this as is, which is just absurd and disingenuous: you can't reject someone but then want for them to make changes and do so much work and jump through hoops to revise a book for you when you only read a sample, not a partial or full, and when you gave them no constructive feedback.

Definitely a hard pass with this one, won't query again.

11/29 - The most personalized rejection I've ever received! She said it was tempting subject matter with a fantastic premise, but that it was too long. She said she might reconsider an more edited version if I don't find an agent.

Dear Ellen,
Thank you for your email. While XXX sounds interesting, I don’t think it is right for my list at this time.
I appreciate your querying us and wish you good luck in finding the right agent who can successfully champion your work.
Sincerely,
Jill Marsal

Initial query (historical fiction) sent: 18 May 2021.
Request for partial: 20 May 2021.
No response, but I send her a quick question: 31 Aug. 2021.
I then discover she has jury duty all of September! So I imagine she will be very preoccupied. Which leads me to...
Follow-up: 20 Oct. 2021.
Rejected: 26 April 2022.

Almost a full year from initially reaching out.

Personal rejection 9/27/22
Her personal note below and while it is a rejection, I am uplifted that she "loves" the concept:
"While there is a lot to like here, I just love the concept, but I'm afraid I must pass. Unfortunately, I'm representing so little memoir these days because even when a project really seems incredible, it's so difficult to break out if the author doesn't have a huge platform. Some editors won't even look at memoir unless the author is "famous."

Submitted as requested after a conference: 5Aug22. Declined: 24Aug22. Received the letter below:

Dear XXX,
It was very nice meeting you and thank you for following up with XXX. Unfortunately, the project does not look like a fit for me at this time. I'm being extremely selective with genre fiction these days and am only taking on new projects where I absolutely fall in love.
This is a very subjective decision on my part and I'm sure another agent or editor will feel differently. Thank you for considering me and best of luck with your future queries.
Sincerely,
Jill
