Dear Ellen,
Thank you for your email. While XXX sounds interesting, I don’t think it is right for my list at this time.
I appreciate your querying us and wish you good luck in finding the right agent who can successfully champion your work.
Sincerely,
Jill Marsal

Initial query (historical fiction) sent: 18 May 2021.
Request for partial: 20 May 2021.
No response, but I send her a quick question: 31 Aug. 2021.
I then discover she has jury duty all of September! So I imagine she will be very preoccupied. Which leads me to...
Follow-up: 20 Oct. 2021.
Rejected: 26 April 2022.

Almost a full year from initially reaching out.

Personal rejection 9/27/22
Her personal note below and while it is a rejection, I am uplifted that she "loves" the concept:
"While there is a lot to like here, I just love the concept, but I'm afraid I must pass. Unfortunately, I'm representing so little memoir these days because even when a project really seems incredible, it's so difficult to break out if the author doesn't have a huge platform. Some editors won't even look at memoir unless the author is "famous."

Submitted as requested after a conference: 5Aug22. Declined: 24Aug22. Received the letter below:

Dear XXX,
It was very nice meeting you and thank you for following up with XXX. Unfortunately, the project does not look like a fit for me at this time. I'm being extremely selective with genre fiction these days and am only taking on new projects where I absolutely fall in love.
This is a very subjective decision on my part and I'm sure another agent or editor will feel differently. Thank you for considering me and best of luck with your future queries.
Sincerely,
Jill

FQ: 7/25/22 Narrative Non-Fiction/True Crime
FR: 8/19/22 Rejection. Super discouraged but reading the other responses, and I realized that, man, she is being subjective in choosing projects these days.

Dear Jennifer Kathleen,https://querytracker.net/agent.php?agent=2853#

Thank you for thinking of us with ONE SUMMER NEVER ENDS: HOW I HELPED SOLVE A THIRTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD COLD CASE. It looks fascinating, and I applaud how you were able to get justice.

Unfortunately, the project does not look like a fit for me at this time. I'm being extremely selective with non-fiction lately, and I'm nervous that New York editors will find this too "regional" and worry that you don't have a national platform. This is a very subjective decision on my part, and I'm sure another agent or editor will feel differently.

Thank you for considering me, and best of luck with your future queries.

Sincerely,
Jill
