I received a kind reply from Steve's assistant Andrea the day after I sent my query. (I sent on a Saturday, received a reply on a Sunday, so they're a hardworking group!)

EQ- 11/20

Steve sent me a personal email with very encouraging, comments. He had a step aside and wished me the best in finding a home for my pb. He is a lovely man and anyone that has the chance to work with him is very lucky.

@Story Man The request for the full came from Hannah Mann and she signed it as his assistant, but the rejection came from Andrea with no mention of her being his assistant. It's a mystery at this point :)

PB query, emailed on 10/23, rejection received on 11/9 after a nudge:

Dear xxxxx

Thank you for your thoughtful submission. xxxxx story has a wonderful premise and you are a talented creator. These great things considered, Steven wasn’t connecting 100% with every element of the project and after careful thought, he doesn’t feel your work is the exact right fit for me at this time, so it’s best for him to pass.

We appreciate the opportunity to consider your book and wish you the very best moving forward with it.

Kind regards,

Hannah Mann

@StoryMan I'd take all those numbers with a grain of salt. I got a FR after 16 days. He could have a "maybe" pile. He could also skip around based on referrals, in-person conference pitches, etc. Good luck to you!

I see on the queryTracker Query Age for Steven Malk that a happy green smiley face appears at 4 days. So, if he knows so quickly when he likes something, why does it take so long to get a rejection?

Very nice rejection that doesn’t feel quite like a form (from his assistant, Hannah Mann):

Thank you for your thoughtful query. Your story has a unique premise and you are a talented writer. These great things considered, we weren’t connecting 100% with every element of the sample and after careful thought, Steven doesn’t feel your work is the exact right fit for him at this time, so it’s best for him to pass. I should note that his current list is such that he is extremely busy and not taking on anything he can possibly resist at the moment, so that played a large part in his decision. As you know, this is an almost entirely subjective industry, and we would be surprised if another agent does not snap this up.

I queried four times (PB) - twice I didn't hear back, twice it took 6-8 weeks.

Hi StaceyTrombley, I queried early July and did not receive a response until late August, so roughly 2 months. I know it's challenging but it's good to practice patience. His office seems incredibly busy right now.

Q: 9/7/17
still no response three weeks later. I know that's not very long but he seemed to be such a fast responder before (last year his assistant requested my MG within an hour)

Anyone else query him recently?
