Lovely personalized rejection. Said the explanation of my fantasy elements should be drawn out. While I understand where she is coming from, the narrative style is very intentional. Also, if you have a male character that is "rough" in any way, you might want to look that over before sending. I think we're in a very female-empowerment focused era in media/entertainment right now. Again, his harshness is intentional and he grows out of it by the end. But I understand that it is hard to gauge these things from 10 pages. Regardless, it is nice to have insight on what may be causing other agents to bow out. Anyone who gets a chance to work with this team would be lucky!

"Thank you for your interest in Talcott Notch. At this time, your manuscript is not quite right for our agency.

I enjoyed the synopsis of this manuscript and feel that you have a strong grasp of plot development and narrative. However, the premise may not be fresh enough to to be sustainable in the current market. Adding a new perspective or unique twist could help the narrative gain more traction with readers. However, this is only one opinion, and I encourage you to continue querying with other agencies."

Posting this because (in spite of the typo), it is actually thoughtful and considerate, unlike so many other rejection letters. It is one of only a handful of non-form rejections I've received, and it's the only one that actually gave me helpful advice. I really appreciate that, and I'd love to work with Ms. Panettieri and her agency in the future. :)

Sent a query and within a few days received a nice response. She said the concept was interesting but she did not fall in love with the voice of the sample.

Aside from appreciating her perspective as an agent and writer, I love her book, "The Single Mother's Guide to Raising Remarkable Boys." I was a single mother to three boys myself. I really think we could be a great fit. Fingers crossed!
