11/27/17 rejection based on #ownvoices

I understand cultural appropriation, but how does a biography based on research of the subject's own papers at the Smithsonian and interviews during his lifetime ever get published if the author is of another race? Any quotes contained in my manuscript are actually the subject's own words, not something I made up. This agent didn't read the manuscript or a sample (query form she requires didn't ask for sample). This is a blanket rejection policy.

bevjack1 - You're welcome. To piggyback on StaceyTrombley's response, the issue isn't so much that writers *can't* (or "shouldn't be allowed to") write characters from outside their own perspective, it's just that given the current political/cultural/sociological upswell of marginalized groups demanding the representation/recognition they've been largely denied by the majority, a lot of people are realizing that those writers (and movie-makers, TV producers, etc etc) have been writing those kinds of characters badly, and in a sometimes-offensive way -- which the majority hasn't realized until now, when the *actual people* those characters have supposedly been representing are speaking up about it. And they're the ones with the right to make the call, because they're the ones with the actual background and experiences, unlike the writers.
It may feel limiting, but it isn't; it's just forcing writers to take a good, long, honest look at our motivations and intentions, acknowledge that our imaginations are, to some extent, limited by our own experiences, and to identify (and ideally correct) biases that we probably don't realize we even hold. It's hard work, but it makes us better writers. Also, reiterating StaceyTrombley's point - ownvoices is about support for marginalized authors, too; they've faced barriers and rejection for not representing the "right" kind of stories forever. Non-marginalized authors are now beginning to experience a small fraction of what marginalized authors have always dealt with - - the ownvoices movement is about trying to level the playing field. NOT by bringing majority-authors down, but by lifting minority-authors up.
I know it's frustrating!!! Rejection totally sucks, especially when it's for something you have no control over! ....But that's also kind of the point.

The thing about #ownvoices is 1) support for marginalized authors. They WANT those authors who have that personal insight to be the ones publishing those books. but the bigger issue is, 2) there have been a handful of books written by white authors about POC that have received a lot of backlash for representation issues. Agents and editors are now very weary of that so they're less likely to pull the trigger on books where the author doesn't share that background.

Thank you. You've further explained what was happening here. I went to Facebook and finally got answers about #ownvoices. I had a beta reader from Canada tell me that I might run into problems with "cultural appropriation" -- and I was shocked. Two of my POV's are Japanese and one is American.
My M.C. and Antagonist are both Japanese, but I have Japanese beta readers who never said peep, so until the Canadian, I didn't think much about it.
I believe I am strongly for writers writing. I wouldn't write Japanese memoir, but without the freedom in fiction, we would nave no Othello, and many other brilliant tomes. Such political correctness carried to the extreme (which seems to be the normal these days) would eliminate all fiction that wasn't autobiography based. My Canadian friend said, yes, but look at blackface and Katy Perry's geisha performance (both concepts hideously tasteless and racist) and I said yes, but we can't gag writers because there are bad writers and racist writers in the mix, can we? I find all of this very upsetting and hope it has no trend. My novel is not about "being" Japanese other than the rich history of geisha, samurai and the fact that we have good and bad people. Period. One of the themes of the book is about not being able to count on reality, that truth is in layers of perception. This agent didn't read the book. She read no chapters. I would hold NO judgment on ANYone until I had seen the material. Thanks very much for your response. I guess this is another reality I need to unwrap for myself. Appreciate your answers. Bev

#ownvoices broadly refers to narratives featuring marginalized/underrepresented protagonists written by authors who, themselves, are of similar (or the same) marginalized/underrepresented status. For example, if a book's protagonist was LGBTQ+, "ownvoices" would indicate that the author, too, was part of the LGBTQ+ community. Since your book has 3 POVs, well, I have no idea; presumably at least one of those narrators is included as a member of a marginalized community - and I'm presuming that your query didn't indicate that you, too, personally identified as part of that community. Generally though, I haven't found that agents require (or even necessarily encourage) authors to disclose that within a query - it's kind of a "it's awesome if you're able to say your project is #ownvoices and are willing to state that in your query, but NOT stating so can't count against you, because who's the agent to say what community an author does or doesn't belong to." Thus, I agree that her comment to you about preferring your MS be #ownvoices is a little odd, in that light. Perhaps your sample pages/synopsis/whatever included some sort of inadvertent bias or obvious "proof" that this wasn't an ownvoices project, and that's what she viewed as problematic? (I'm just trying to offer suggestions; I obviously know nothing about you/your book!)
