I submitted a pb, but I knew my chances of securing representation with him were slim to none. Nowhere does he speak about picture books in specific, and they're not even listed on his website bio (though he is said to rep them). I later learned that he told my editor he doesn't take on many pbs. So heads up, pb writers.

Form letter: Dear [Full Name],

I’ll pass on the chance to pursue, but thanks kindly all the same for thinking of me for your picture book ms.

Best wishes on your agent search—"

I met him at a conference and really liked him. He requested the full the last time I queried a project (a few years ago). Disappointed to receive no response.

Hi KSmith, it is a standard agreement found commonly in the film industry. Given that Inkwell is a reputable agency, I wouldn't worry too much about it. An agency's business model profits by selling completed works. It's too much work for them to sift through thousands of letters, steal a good idea from a fully finished work, then ask one of their own clients to reproduce the work. Also, ideas are a dime a dozen :)

Has anyone read their submission agreement? I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to say, basically, that they can reject you and give your idea to one of their clients and there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe I misread, but I think I'll hold off on sending to them.

She may be starting her own list now and it's just not official yet. Not unusual for an assistant to be promoted to agent, that's usually what they're working towards.

Hmm, that's odd, I found her on MSWL which is why I decided to submit to her, as she was looking for the kind of book I've written. Oh well!

shewrites, according to her twitter, Claire is an assistant at Inkwell and not an agent.
