"The editors at major NYC houses increasingly insist on authors with national media platforms and pre-existing audiences in the tens or hundreds of thousands—we just don’t think anyone we work with on a regular basis will bite."

I always appreciate when an agent takes the time to personalize a rejection. They certainly don't have to do that.

In this instance, Jennifer Manguera Literary Manager with Ross Yoon, wrote in part, "Thanks so much for giving us a chance to take a look at (your project). We found (it) to be a promising work—one into which you obviously poured your heart."

The parenthesis are mine.

It was also a one-day turnaround to an e-mail query. Still a rejection, yes, but one that gives me hope.

On 5/30, I queried Howard. Today I've heard back. Same response from Gail: only taking on nonfiction and some fiction from their authors. I might put this agency on hold later this year.

I had contact with an agent there named Anna Sproul. She replied to my query and proposal within two days with a very kind rejection, and even replied the same day when I emailed a followup question. Very nice.

Because their website showed another title on their list with some similarities to mine, I sent a preliminary query asking if there would be interest, or if my title would be viewed as competition. Six weeks later, no reply even to that email.

This agent is presently only considering non-fiction proposals. Received a pleasant letter explaining their new policy.
