Query sent on January 10th, 2020.
Personal rejection with feedback on the query and five pages on February 23, 2020. With an offer to resubmit if revised.

To say I was shocked to receive a detailed note is to say nothing. I've had three full requests, one of which an agent had had for almost six months, and neither of those agents provided anything but the same form rejection on the FULL. She seems wonderful and kind. Out of dozens of agents, she's the only person who's provided actual feedback. I would definitely recommend submitting to her.

Short email that says publishers now, especially with Covid, want authors to help market and sell their books. Suggested I should reconsider my not having a social media platform.

Maybe this info will help new writers. Just received the weirdest rejection from her. She wrote that she'd have to pass because my word count was TOO LOW for my genre. It's Upmarket with 78k words. I'm no expert, but I've read everywhere like a million times that 70-80k is perfect for my type of novel. Also, she wrote it should be closer to 85... Mine is 78k... 7k difference is a dealbreaker? Seriously?:) People have cut and added way more words in editing, which will inevitably happen before submission to publishers.
I've submitted my previous novel in the same genre with the same word count and had 3 full requests and haven't heard even once that it was too low. In fact, I've read successful books in my genre that were only 65k.
So, basically she just didn't want to send form rejection, which is admirable. But this can be really misleading for a new author who might rush to add 10k words just for the heck of it. That is why I don't think that writing just anything in a rejection letter to make it seem personal is necessarily better than sending a form one.

I hope this helps someone.

Julie did provide a couple of paragraphs of feedback on my manuscript, but (bizarrely) she seemed to have totally misunderstood my writing. She offered a chance to resub, but I don't think she's the right agent for me, so I'll pass. I probably shouldn't be surprised, as her history is in Christian publishing, and with a lot of romance, and my MS is edgy, literary SF.
