I re-queried Kathy letting her know that, after several R&Rs, I have transformed my memoir into a YA crossover romcom with social issues embedded. She had turned me down prior when the MS was a memoir but now kindly asked for my first fifty pages.

Kathy was kind enough to send me the following note about an hour after I queried her. How wonderful it would be if more agents could take the time to do the same. I know it's likely impossible to do so given their immense workloads, but still, it is a delight to have a personal touch.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for this query. Sounds like a warm memoir, but I am concentrating more on fiction just now.
I’m sorry to pass up the chance to read this; I’m sure you will find the right person to help you.

Debra505, I only submitted a query and got a 50-page request a little less than a week later.

Does this agent only want a query letter? I found it difficult to tell from her website.

Unhelpful "Sorry, I just wasn't caught up enough in the story or with the characters to ask to see more." Oh...I'll have to put more "hooks" in it?

Hi Katie,

Thanks for giving me the chance to read some of [YA psychological suspense]. It’s a unique story, for sure, but I didn’t find [main character] that compelling a character, in the early pages—so this isn’t a project for me.

I do appreciate your thinking of me and wish you the best.

Quick but perfunctory response:
Thanks for thinking of me, but this doesn’t sound like a project that is right for me just now.

Best,

Kathy
