Nudge with Offer: 1/13
FR: 1/17
1/23: I emailed her indicating I did not accept the offer; she wrote back and thanked me for the update, told me she's still reading and appreciates the extra time. Seems very nice and communicative.
Nudge with Offer to Publish with a small press: 3/9
3/9: Melissa said she's still reading, will finish ASAP with thoughts. I indicated I'd make specific revisions to first chapters, and she requested to see the revisions. She is so responsive and seems quite kind. I have fingers crossed!
Update: Melissa rejected the manuscript. Said she loves my writing and thinks it's strong ("the mystery kept me turning pages"), but ultimately she didn't connect with my protag (anti-hero). This is all fine, though sad and disappointing, but guys -- she is the most helpful agent EVER. "If I may offer a word of unsolicited advice: if your aspirations are higher than a small press, don't take their offer. For what it's worth, I think you have talent, and I think your manuscript deserves better." It hurt to hear this, but in the end it's been SOOOO helpful. Also, I wrote her back and asked her to clarify her advice. She did write back and told me why she didn't think the small press was good for me. Then she said: "If I were you, I would be patient and keep querying. You shouldn't settle for agents who aren't legit or publishers who won't do much for your career. If you've been querying for a long time and you're losing patience, maybe consider shelving it and writing something new! I'd be more than open to reading something new from you in the future."

She's amazing.

UPDATE:
4/12/18 - I revised my manuscript and asked her to take another look. She requested the full again.
7/3 - I told her I'd received an R&R from another agent and would she like to take a look after that revision. She replied, "If the R&R is addressing any of these issues, I'd be happy to take another look! Otherwise, I'm afraid I'm just not the right agent. I'm just not feeling passionate enough about the characters and story to be a champion for it in its current form." I indicated the R&R definitely addresses the issues she had with it, and now she is AGAIN re-reading. She is such an advocate for writers. I mean, how many chances has she given me?! She's so incredible!

9/7/18 - I received ANOTHER R&R from another agent, and she wanted me to re-send when completed.

Got an email today in response to a query from Feb 2017. "I discovered a folder of queries that I thought were closed out. I feel awful for keeping you waiting! I assume you've found another agent by now, but if not, would you please let me know if this is still available?" She was so polite and apologetic. I'll be sending her my MS when I finish the R&R.

I wish I had better news for you, but I've now had a chance to read and consider, and I've decided that it's not a perfect fit for me and Rubin Pfeffer Content. I liked the concept, but I have a very small list and I have to be extremely selective. I just didn't feel that spark of excitement I'd need in order to move forward.

Thank you again for giving me the opportunity. I wish you the best of luck finding the right agent!

My best,

Melissa
