I had a very good experience with Ms. Osteen. She requested my manuscript (a literary novel) and rejected it three months later after one nudge (she had sent an email previously but apparently I didn't get it). She was just very polite and friendly throughout. High marks to her as someone who treats authors like human beings.

Queried on a Tuesday and got a personal response on a Thursday. She passed but wrote a very kind personal note: "Thank you for sharing your story with me – what a gift you are giving readers in showing the way towards healing. It’s a beautiful and selfless thing..."

I wish more agents could be this responsive and this personal and, well, nice.

FQ: 6/14
Rejection: 8/18. I did send her a (very nice) "nudge" email on 8/16, and she finally responded. The response was PERSONAL, providing me with specific feedback on the pages she'd read and saying very positive things, but not for her. She said "you will find an agent for this," which I thought was very nice.

No response/closed on 8/17.

Query Tracker says this agent has a 54% response rate, but on the basis of the last 4 months, that is not accurate; i.e., it's more like a 20% (or less) response rate.

Received the following message on 5/11/20:

"Thank you for your query. Duvall is currently on maternity leave, and is not reading submissions at this time. You are welcome to query her again in July."

Thank you for your interest in working with Duvall Osteen. We're very sorry to be sending this letter but on the basis of your query, we’re afraid Duvall can’t represent your work. The high volume of submissions she receives forces her to be extremely selective, and she doesn’t believe she’ll be able to give your work the time and attention it deserves.

Sent the query to the general email they provided on Jan 7. Form rejection letter after 36 days. They did not specify how may pages to send, so I sent the entire manuscript. Seemed to imply that they only read the query though..... "We're very sorry to be sending this letter but on the basis of your query, we’re afraid she can’t consider your work. The high volume of submissions....etc etc... etc..."

No warm & fuzzy as in some cases below....

Although she said she was not the right person to represent my work, Ms. Osteen wrote me the nicest rejection letter I've ever received--filled with warmth and encouragement. Whoever gets to work with her will enjoy a good relationship, I think.
