Thank you for your interest in working with me here a Aragi Inc. I'm very sorry to be sending this letter but on the basis of your query, I'm afraid I can’t consider your work. The high volume of submissions I receive forces me to be extremely selective, and I don't believe I'll be able to give your work the time and attention it deserves.

I wish you the best in your search for representation.

Reject maybe 20 minutes later that just about made my day:

Dear ----, thank you for querying me. I laughed out loud at the concept here – it’s fresh, and also moving, and rooted in a familiar sentiment! But I’m afraid I’m not the best agent for this type of work. I wish you the very best, though – and many congratulations on completing such a compelling novel.

When this agency asks for "a brief synopsis" in the query letter, do they want a synopsis (with spoilers/arc) or a blurb?

I had a very good experience with Ms. Osteen. She requested my manuscript (a literary novel) and rejected it three months later after one nudge (she had sent an email previously but apparently I didn't get it). She was just very polite and friendly throughout. High marks to her as someone who treats authors like human beings.

Queried on a Tuesday and got a personal response on a Thursday. She passed but wrote a very kind personal note: "Thank you for sharing your story with me – what a gift you are giving readers in showing the way towards healing. It’s a beautiful and selfless thing..."

I wish more agents could be this responsive and this personal and, well, nice.

Rejection: 8/18. I did send her a (very nice) "nudge" email on 8/16, and she finally responded. The response was PERSONAL, providing me with specific feedback on the pages she'd read and saying very positive things, but not for her. She said "you will find an agent for this," which I thought was very nice.

FQ: 6/14

No response/closed on 8/17.

Query Tracker says this agent has a 54% response rate, but on the basis of the last 4 months, that is not accurate; i.e., it's more like a 20% (or less) response rate.

Received the following message on 5/11/20:

"Thank you for your query. Duvall is currently on maternity leave, and is not reading submissions at this time. You are welcome to query her again in July."
