Make your submission letter to the point and as brief as possible. We recommend including a short synopsis of your work, an author bio, and the first five pages of your manuscript (pasted into the body of your email, no attachments please).

ER 5/10/18

I’m afraid it’s still a pass. The writing just isn’t winning me over, but I trust another agent thinks otherwise.

This is a rewrite of a book I sent him over a year ago. So not a form rejection which makes it even more painful. Dream agent no more. :-(

Nathang, Ellen Levine is HUGE, I'm so, so happy for you. Oh, it's really inspiring to have some GOOD news in these comments for a change. I wish you the top success, and hope she places it VERY, VERY SOON! It's a terrific agency, you are in good hands!

(Yes, I've always found Harvey to be a (busy) gentleman but down to earth, no BS and that's always appreciated.)

bevjack1, thank you for your kind words. I ended up accepting the offer of Ellen Levine @ Trident Media Group. I was quite fortunate to have three offers of rep from wonderful agents, but I'm happy with my choice in the end.

Since this is Harvey Klinger's thread, I'll just briefly say that I found him to be courteous and professional in our brief correspondence. I should note (in case it wasn't clear on my previous note) that he did not officially offer rep. He simply asked if the manuscript was still available, and when I informed him it wasn't, I didn't hear back. I don't know if it would have been an offer or not, but in the end, it didn't matter. I was thrilled with the three offers I received, and I'm happy with my final choice. Good luck to you, Bev, and to everyone else!

I had followed him on Twitter and got a DM saying he would be happy to read my first few chapters. I had already submitted to him an hour earlier so he checked it out.
ER: 2/13/18 Opening pages didn't win him over. I was impressed by his direct contact on Twitter and his response to my email.

Nathang, Congrats on finding representation! Are you happy with your choice? Who did you go with? I was so excited reading your experience with Klinger. (he's my agent of choice) and can't deny a bit of envy. Best of luck to you! Let us know when you get a publisher!!! I'd like to read it. Bev

Literary Fiction -- 87,000 words

Short note that said the novel was too "quiet" for his taste. I appreciate his reading and the response, however short.
Update: I followed up with a few questions, and he responded well, inviting me to revise for pacing and resubmit.

Update 2: Sent him the full manuscript per on 01/17/18 after revising. I have an offer of rep on the manuscript from another agent, but I wanted to give Mr. Klinger a chance to see it since he was kind enough to say he'd look at a revision. He let me know he will read the manuscript quickly and respond.

Update 3: Mr. Klinger sent an email asking if the novel was still available, but this was almost a week past the deadline and I had already accepted another offer of rep.

Met Harvey at Thrllerfest asked for first 50, then wanted the qhole thing. Sent him something that had a problem I missed and it got rejected, tried to send him the fixed version and he politely declined. Nice guy and helpful, maybe next time.
