WritingGnitirW, same thing happened to me yesterday as well. I submitted a PB (text only) and got the same illustrator response. I'm guessing it was a rejection that had the wrong form sent. On a positive note, I still appreciate getting a response even if its content is off :).

WritingGnitirW - I think right now she is mostly looking for artists (illo only, except for PB), so she probably just sent the wrong form? Normally I'd worry she got people mixed up, but with her narrow request right now I'm guessing form letter mistake.

I sent a manuscript in on July 8. Today (July 13) she sent a form rejection about my "portfolio" and how art is so subjective. She suggested some Twitter art hashtags to follow and wished me luck. Do I chalk this up as a rejection and assume she just clicked the wrong form rejection button even though I submitted a manuscript and am not an illustrator?

From Twitter: "To clarify: I am only open to picture books, illustrators, and MG graphic novels, and YA graphic novels. Everything else is still closed at this time. I will add that if you don't see your selection, it means I am not open that."

Is she only accepting YA graphic novels?

@sarahhawkinsauthor, I got the same wording in my rejection. I *think* it means we were in the "maybe" pile?

Rejection after 73 days, but it didn't seem like a usual form rejection? She said, "Sometimes I need a little longer to sit with a manuscript, since they contain elements that I find compelling, but I'm sorry, this one ultimately just didn't come together for me the way I had hoped. This is a subjective reaction based on my preferences and current wishlist. I'm sorry I cannot be more specific at this time," which makes me hope that my query is solid enough for other agents.

Sometimes I need a little longer to sit with a manuscript, but I've gone over your query and sample pages and, I'm sorry, this one just isn't quite working for me.

Form letter. I queried her once in 2019 and again in 2021. The 2019 rejection had “I loved some elements while others don’t work for me” while this 2021 didn’t have that all. It was expected; this didn’t seem her style. So if you got that line — she meant it!

Very nice rejection with a lot of feedback. Like others, I can't tell if this was personal or form.

Queried 27th of Feb 2021 via form. MG science fantasy 45k.
Rejected on the 7th of April, saying it might be a better match for one of their other adult agents. Nobody else in the agency seems to be after MG, so I'm curious as to why she offered that as an alternative. We'll see what happens.
