Five hours after my submission...

Thank you for your query. While your project certainly has merit, I'm going to pass. As I'm sure you know, it's important that your agent be totally excited by/committed to/passionate about your project, and I'm afraid that just didn't happen here. But opinions vary considerably in this business, and mine is just one. I'm sure you'll find others who feel differently. I hope so!

I wish you the very best in your search for representation.

Warm regards,

A form rejection, very polite, but such a shame that a form that sounds so nice and sincere is canned.

Same form as below. I have to say, when I used to send out queries and submissions via mail, the letters were rarely form letters. I think there are so many more people who query agents now because it's so incredibly easy that agents are just inundated...to get anything other than a form would probably have to be something that an agent really, really, really thought they wanted to take on but couldn't for one reason or the other. Unfortunately, it makes it much more difficult to gauge your writing ability and the project itself because there's no way to really know anymore.
