While it is frustrating to not hear back, no agent owes you a response to an email. They are getting hundreds of emails a month. I get cold pitched multiple times a day in my job and if I responded to every email (especially the bad pitches) I would never have time for anything but email.

I have been published numerous times for non-fiction writing, but this is my first experience dealing with agents when I submitted a work of fiction. There is a world of difference.

Non-fiction publishers act in a much more professional manner. You can tell that they read the material, and they either tell you that it's not for them, or accept it. Lines of communication are established.

Fiction, which seems to require an agent (I don't know why) act in the most unprofessional way imaginable. They don't let people know their personal emails, and because they often don't reply you have no idea whether they have read the submission or not. Is this because there is so much dross being sent to them? If that were the case, surely they can simply look at a few pages of the publication and send a note saying that it's being rejected. Instead, there is this vacuum where you have no idea whether the email had been lost, or read, or whether a technical malfunction has prevented the world's next best manuscript from being published.

But above all, what is missing is common civility. I send you an email, you must respond. You don't have to write an awful lot, but general politeness dictates that some response should be provided.

I rarely post comments but I have to say I'm a bit bummed to not even get a look on this one. There were so many elements on her MSWL this manuscript hit, and she seems to be a lovely agent.

It's tough when it's both a "no response means no" AND "no from one is no from all" agency. I wish there was at least an, "Agent Name has read and responded to all queries before DATE" inclusion on their website.

I don't mind rejections of any kind - at least I know someone at least saw the darn query. But the silence of the NRMNs sure is wearing.

The form specifies that they can't provide feedback "due to the volume of submissions received by the agency."
