I really hate when form letters are telling us lies. Am I supposed to believe that they read every sample? really? First, those are interns and no, no human being could read that much. It is like when the form is saying your work is amazing, but it is a form. Sometimes I dont know if they understand that we know is a form and that is an intern talking.

Thank you so much for thinking of Nelson Literary Agency for your query. We wish we could offer a more personalized response but on average, we receive 500+ email query letters a week. Do know that every query letter and sample are read and even though your project is not right for us, it might be right for another agent so don’t give up! We are also sorry to have no agent recommendations to offer.

Good luck with all your publishing endeavors.

Sincerely,
Kristin Nelson

Pass 19 July, very polite R letter. Apparently she passed to a colleague so they could look as well, but both declined. Quick and professional!

Originally queried Kristin, but after reading my sample pages she passed my query on to Danielle who requested a full.

Kind personalized rejection with a couple of standard industry phrases on why she’s passing.
Sigh.
Rejection is always a bit of a disappointment, but there’s only one thing to do- keep writing. Best wishes to the rest of you in the trenches

It was slightly personalized. Seems like she had it put in a "maybe" pile, and while she thought it has "a strong concept and solid writing", she didn't think it was right for her. Oddly enough, this is giving me some hope. Just have to find the right agent. :)

@WhidgetBaker: That's not a terribly helpful rejection, but it's probably more honest than most. These agents are making a lot of gut checks, and in some cases the reason given for rejection is an post facto rationalization for what's really intuition. I once received a rejection in which the agent raved over the characters and the story, but then said she was passing anyway (and that was the only helpful response I received on that manuscript, even from the others who made a request). That's just the nature of the beast, unfortunately.

And I wish I could offer some advice on the mysteriously flawed manuscript or give some tips on how to charm an agent but honestly, you're probably better at this than I am.

I queried Kristin on 3/7. got a FR on 4/1. I finally got a reply yesterday (pass) on 6/13. It was entirely personalized and very very kind.

She said she read the entire thing, which she almost never does, and loved a lot of it, but didn't like the ending. She said she couldn't put her finger on why and normally she'd send a revise and resubmit, but that she didn't have any idea how to fix it, really, so she was passing, but it was a really tough one.

These are so brutal. I have gotten like 15 rejections like this in the last few weeks. I'm getting so so so tired of them.

Chin up out there. It's rough, but you gotta keep on trying I guess.
