Always verify agent's information before sending your query. Verify the agent's query preferences, contact information, genres of interest, and if the agent is still open to queries.

Although QueryTracker tries to stay current, it is not always easy. Never trust any single source for agent information (and yes, this includes QueryTracker).

Review the user comments for more information, and always follow exactly what it says on the agent's website.

And NEVER give money to an "agent".

I just took a look in the timeline explorer and the answer is: it varies, but no more than three months. however, if you're going to see an offer it's more likely to come in the first three weeks (one took two months, though.)

I received a very kind rejection:

Dear Taylor:

Thank you so much for thinking of me for your query. I wish I could offer a more personalized response but on average, I receive 500+ email query letters a week. Do know that every query letter and sample are read and even though your project is not right for me, it might be right for another agent so don’t give up! I’m also sorry I have no agent recommendations to offer.

Good luck with all your publishing endeavors.

Sincerely,

Kristin Nelson

I'm not quite sure if it's a form or not, being that it's different than the versions below. Either way, I appreciate her kindness.

Science Fiction - 80,000 words

Not sure if this is a form rejection or not?

Thank you so much for thinking of me for your project! I thought your query and sample were well-written with a strong concept but not quite what I’m looking for at the moment. Because I’m careful to keep my client list manageable, I’m being really selective about what I request. However, I think another agent is going to be intrigued enough to ask for the manuscript and I’m sorry I can’t offer a referral.

Good luck with all your publishing endeavors.

I queried May 11th and haven't heard anything either. Knowing she's super fast, I wanted to re-query today, but decided to check Query Tracker first. I'll post again if something changes. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear back.

While I got the same e-mail--"I had set aside a bunch of queries that needed a closer read. I blinked and here we are [...]"--Ms. Nelson did offer me a personalized line about her blog (which I did gush about in the intro to my query because it's a fantastic resource for all writers). I really appreciated that. Even though it was a rejection, it was very, very kind. She's an amazing agent and I wish everyone else waiting to hear back the best of luck.

Daisywilbur, I got the same e-mail. Kind of a let down to know it's a copy and paste, but it's the first time I see such an encouraging note. Even when I got partial requests it wasn't this nice.

Thank you so much for your patience. I had set aside a bunch of queries that needed a closer read. I blinked and here we are already into early July. So I apologize for how long I took to get back to you.

Kristin's assistant emailed me. I've made it past her, and my query is on Kristin's desk. She said she has just returned from a couple of trips and conferences, so she is a little behind on reading but should be catching up soon.

I'm nervous now. I've made revisions based on another agent's suggestions since I queried her. Kristin will be reading the old version :/
