Always verify agent's information before sending your query. Verify the agent's query preferences, contact information, genres of interest, and if the agent is still open to queries.

Although QueryTracker tries to stay current, it is not always easy. Never trust any single source for agent information (and yes, this includes QueryTracker).

Review the user comments for more information, and always follow exactly what it says on the agent's website.

And NEVER give money to an "agent".

Query Guidelines

From the agent: Dear Author, I periodically read the comments section on QueryTracker to make sure that my team is responsive to your queries. It is very important to me that every query is responded to in a timely way, within days whenever possible. And that if a manuscript is requested, that we read it and give you feedback within a month. I do not use interns to read queries, but one of my in-house agents as well as an editorial person. Every query is read by someone with at least five years professional experience in trade publishing. While I understand that there can be frustration with a quick response, I demand that of my staff out of respect for your time and efforts. I absolutely use a form rejection (one that I crafted years ago to respectfully decline materials) and also have a form rejection for manuscripts where I recognize that I just don't get the book. A more personal rejection will follow with projects that touched me but may not be quite ready, and where I do have some ideas to share. Recognizing that this is all very subjective is also important. You must have faith in your work and talent in the face of multiple rejections until you find that one very smart agent and editor, that get you. I have declined the work of a number of bestselling authors and will, I am sure, do so again. The point is to keep writing, and know that we all at VS&A are honored by you and the invitation to review your work. Kind regards, VS Victoria Sanders & Associates, LLC

All communication was with assistant, Deborah Jayne. Very communicative. Reject letter was kind and encouraging. I emailed back, asking if VSA would be willing to elaborate what they meant by "there is still some more work to be done editorially." Hoping for a reply.

I queried Victoria Sanders at VSA on 2/1 and received a rejection email the next day, on 2/2. Impressed by the speedy and courteous rejection, and I take her at her word that my query/materials was actually read/reviewed. I'm aiming high on agents I'm contacting first, approaching only topflight agents who rep major best-selling authors because I believe my novel is of that caliber. So I'm not surprised at all that some or even most of them will reject my manuscript. It only takes one great agent to launch a big book. The waiting game is what bothers me most....so many agents say you may (or may not) hear back from them in 8 weeks or longer. Refreshing to get such a quick reply from VSA, even though it was a thumb's down.

Queried on February 25th.

She asked for manuscript on 27th, and I sent it on the same day.

Here's hoping!

YA Horror 94,000 words

She sent an email saying that my manuscript is still under consideration and that I will hear back from them soon. Is this a good thing?? It's only been a few weeks.

Passed on manuscript on 3/19/15. Very quick response and very kind rejection. Said she liked the story but it needed more editorial work, which is fair.

I emailed her on 3/23 asking her if she would be willing to see a significantly revised manuscript in a month or so. She said she would be delighted to! Keep the hope!

I sent email (on 4/17/15) saying I was working with editor and would get it to her in July. She sent on 4/21/15 that that was fine. I sent the revised manuscript on 6/30/15 and she sent a confirmation of receipt the very next day. She emailed me on 7/14 saying it was still under consideration.

7/24: Offer of representation. It happens, people, it DOES happen! Told her I would let her know in a week and emailed the three other agents who had it about the offer... Accepted her offer 6 days later!!
