Always verify agent's information before sending your query. Verify the agent's query preferences, contact information, genres of interest, and if the agent is still open to queries.

Although QueryTracker tries to stay current, it is not always easy. Never trust any single source for agent information (and yes, this includes QueryTracker).

Review the user comments for more information, and always follow exactly what it says on the agent's website.

And NEVER give money to an "agent".

Leave comments about your experiences with this literary agent, or read what other authors have to say.

"Many thanks for writing. You have an interesting idea for a book and there's a lot to like about your approach. But in the end I'm afraid I didn't come away from this quite fully convinced this was something I think I'd be able to represent successfully. I'm sorry not to be more enthusiastic but thanks nonetheless for giving me a chance to review it and best of luck in finding it the right home. "

Very polite decline. Sounded like a real gentleman.

I also got the form letter that sounds like it's not a form:

Dear My Name -

But in the end I'm afraid I didn't come away from this quite fully convinced this was something I think I'd be able to represent successfully. Same as the others. On the plus side, I've learned to use the 'Clients' tabs to give me better insight. Sure enough, I can see now why I got the rejection letter. Despite the literary listing, I can also see we'd be a poor match too. But at least he didn't leave me flapping in the wind for weeks. :)
