“ Thanks for your query. This is a good concept with solid writing, but unfortunately doesn't quite feel like a fit for me. I'm not sure I know the editors looking for something like this, which I think best fits in the genre fiction category, so am going to step aside. I appreciate the opportunity to have considered your work and wish you the best with this project.

Best,
Jen”

It was a personalised rejection as well and she gave me an actual reason why she wasn’t moving forward with it. I’ll take that as a win in a strange way.

92k literary/upmarket. E-mailed query letter on 1/27; Jen replied with a request for 10 pages within a few hours on the same day; just received extremely kind personalized rejection on 2/9:

Thanks for sending this along. I like your writing, but unfortunately, don't think I'm quite the right agent for this. It leans a tad too quiet/literary for my tastes. I'm going to step aside, but appreciate the opportunity and wish you the best with this project.

I agree with the comments about it feeling like speed dating agents :-)

1/5/23 Form Rejection, Memoir 90k
She implied my story was neither unique nor relevant, which I found unnecessary.

"Memoir is really tough to place unless the author has a significant platform and/or really unique and relevant story."

While I understand finding representation for a memoir without being a celebrity or having a huge platform is unlikely, adding that part about relevancy was rude. The rest of the response was quite kind, though.

I echo what others have said. Really nice to have a personalized touch to the rejection (in my case, time-traveling stories are hard to place with editors).

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for your query, but I'm afraid this doesn't sound like a fit for me. I'm going to pass, but appreciate the opportunity and wish you the best with this project.
