I really don't understand what the agent thinks they're trying to do with this rejection template. Frankly, it's unfair, cowardly and dishonest. We're authors - we're used to rejections. Just give it to us straight, i.e. 'no, not for me'. Saying everything has merit helps no-one.

As kind as the form reply is, it gives everyone a false sense of confidence as a canned response. When I read it, I initially thought it was a personalized rejection and was disheartened to find its actually a form rejection. With all due respect, it feels too specific as a form reply. Had a moment of feeling encouraged and like I had a bit of actual information to build off of and bolster myself with and now just feel disappointed and unsure of their actual thoughts/confidence in my project.

I'd prefer a generic rejection over a misleading one any day. We'll get 'em next time.

"Thank you for the opportunity to read your work. While there is so much potential here, I'm afraid it isn't the right fit for my list at this time. Don't be discouraged, your work has great merit and will hopefully find a home soon! Wishing you the best of luck moving forward and I do hope you will consider me should you find yourself querying in the future."

I had planned to submit to another agent at the agency, but am I reading their website right that they're saying a no from one is a no from all? "Please only submit the same manuscript to one PLE agent. We are very collaborative and share projects internally if we think they are a better fit for a colleague’s list." :(
