Thank you for submitting your query for SWEET WATER to me for my consideration. Even though I found great qualities within your query and synopsis, there was a little bit too much of a passive voice throughout the narrative in the sample. Passive voice can leave a reader feeling a bit disconnected from the "present" of the story. Sentences with these phrases can sometimes be difficult to navigate in how to get rid of it. My recommendation is to make the verb active (while still keeping your tense) and restructuring the rest of the sentence into clauses until you can rearrange it in a way that makes sense with your established voice. I encourage you to continue to develop your writing through feedback from Beta Readers or a trusted Critique Partner.
I'm sorry to not have better news to share. The publishing industry is very subjective, so what may not work for me could be just what another agent is looking for.
