Heard back from him in six weeks with a near offer of representation if I would make some additions to the table of contents. I responded eagerly and politely, explaining my hesitation to make the additions. I honestly thought this was the beginning of a conversation where we would both have the opportunity to explain our opinions and come to some sort of compromise. But he immediately rescinded the offer and ended the conversation. I think he generally has a decent reputation, but to me he embodies the imbalance of power in the publishing business.

REVISION: After more than 3 months, I did get a short, personal email rejection, which I appreciated.
YA SciFi. I met John at an agent/writer mixer. He said I could query him via email, but he hasn't answered me so far. I sent a nudge a week ago (as a "response" to my first email ... should I send the nudge another way?) but still no response. It's now been 50 days. Should I consider myself ghosted?
It's now been 63 days with no response after a couple of nudges. I'm considering this query CNR. I'm perplexed, since he personally invited me to submit, that he didn't at least send a form rejection note.
Talk about feeling like a non-entity!

Form rejection after 20 days.
"Thank you for letting me review your query. Unfortunately, I don't believe that we are the appropriate agents to represent this material. In this very competitive market, we are simply not enthusiastic enough about our ability to sell this work to offer you representation. We wish you the best of luck placing this successfully. Thank you, once again, for letting us consider it."
