Q: 5/1/25 95k Women's Fiction
Reply: 5/2/25 rejected - that's the quickest rejection I've ever received. I guess I'll keep on self publishing. The time I spent on this query was a total waste when I could have been working on publishing the manuscript myself.

The response is totally impersonal, which I can understand given she's probably very busy. However, coming from a literary agency, the response should have been free of errors. It uses the plural pronoun "their" when referring to one person (Jessica), making the noun singular. The pronoun should agree with the noun and be the singular "her."

BookEnds Literary Agent Jessica Alvarez has expressed that 'xxxx' does not align with their current list preferences and wishes you well in your writing career.

Well, back to self publishing. The only reason I submitted this manuscript to an agent is that I'm having a difficult time finding acceptable stock images with which to design my cover. Not a good reason to go for an agent.

Thanks for querying me. I'm afraid (TITLE) doesn't sound like a good fit for my list at this time. I wish you all the best with your writing career and hope you find the right agent for you soon.

(My personal comment: I don't know which type of agent I hate worse. The one who is slow to respond or the one that responds negatively so quickly that you know she gave the project no thought whatsoever. With the first, at least you have the illusion that they considered it, but with the second you know they just arbitrarily cleared their in-box. The downside is such a kneejerk rejection often means a NO for the entire agency. It turns out that is NOT true of BookEnds, where you are still free to submit to another of their agents. Still, frustrating, to say the least.)

R; 4/21/25 "Thank you so much for querying me. XXX sounds like an interesting project, but I'm afraid I'm going to pass on looking at more. My client list is very full, forcing me to be extremely selective about taking on anyone new at the moment. But please do keep querying other agents, and I wish you all the best with your writing career."
