I got her incredibly misleading form rejection:

Thanks so much for letting me consider your query, which I read with interest. Unfortunately, however, I will not be offering representation for the title at this time. Though it seems like it will be a great read, the book is not a great fit for my list. I didn't connect with the writing in the sample, and thus I simply wouldn't be the best advocate for the manuscript. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly subjective business, and I wish you all the best in finding an agent who feels passionately about the project, and eventually an editorial home for the book.

Best of luck on your endeavors and thank you for your submission.

I always get skipped. I truly don’t understand how this always happens. (maybe what I wrote is odd and they aren’t quite sure what to do about it.) :)

50 pages is a partial. Just getting a partial in the hands of a real pro was always considered at least a small victory. Also, my synopsis was an atrocity. Yikes!

(got the great story but... form rejection three days after nudge (I consider that at least quick attention to my nudge. that's ok.)

You could be in the "maybe" pile.

@guitaristal: What a fascinating set of stories you have to tell! Yeah, a form rejection means any variation of "I don't think I can sell this." It often has nothing to do with the writing or even the topic. Sometimes they just don't have the editor contacts, the market is shifting from one genre to another, or their client list is too full already. Keep going. There's a good chance someone else will feel differently!

I was Nina Simone's guitarist and music director for over forty years. My memoir is in the form of 30 stories about my adventures with Nina. I submitted my query to Soumeya based on her cat being named Nina Simone, thinking she is a fan and would "get it." What I got was, albeit pretty quickly, the form rejection that everyone is receiving, so don't be fooled by the "personal" touch.
