Lit Agent Action: "After careful review, I will be stepping aside."
Character Roll [Nat 1]: "You sigh hopelessly. As you make to leave, you manage to trip face first into the fire of despair. In doing so, you knock over the pedestal of psychological safety, shattering its local wisdom for generations to come."

PS:
I'm absolutely joking and I do not pretend to understand the life of literary agents, but as a comment on my own experience I really do wish I got a better answer than:

"""
Thank you for your submission. I appreciate the opportunity to consider <BOOK TITLE>. After careful review, I will be stepping aside.
I wish you the best of luck in your publishing endeavors!
Sincerely,
Mary
"""

I only wish, privately or publicly, to understand *why* my manuscript's first impression did not live up to par. I can take the heat. I'll try not to pull a Vader. Critical feedback, even brief and brutal, is better than no feedback at all. Again, I understand why it sucks to provide negative feedback. Some people might interpret it as a be all, end all type of situation, and nobody wants to be responsible for that—respect is a hard line to walk. So, this is me... saying "yeah, I understand". But also, "DANG IT, BRO, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S UP, CHA FEEL ME?"

I appreciate the rejection in record time. It is a form letter with no comments.
