Dear Ms. St George,

THIS IS FOR YOUR SUGGESTION BOX, IF YOU WILL.

Let me thank you, first, for your quick reply to my query. I appreciate it. Let me also offer a suggestion with my utmost respect.

If it is indeed generally difficult for you to place memoirs, can’t you remove that category from your “want list” or areas of interest listed on your website, and from QueryTracker too? It’s unfair to us writers who spend a lot of our precious time to, first, determine which agents will look at memoir submissions and, next, to actually prepare one, carefully tailored to your requirements.

On the other hand, if it is merely a convenient to cite such a reason, or if it’s a blanket excuse for rejection, simply because you don’t like the submission itself, it’s more useful to us, and to you, to be candid about it.

Yours truly,

xxxxxxxxxxx

I GOT A REPLY

Hello Tom,

Firstly, I want to apologize for any difficulties our want list or QueryTracker listing have posed you during the querying process.

We did consider your submission, but ultimately felt it wasn't right for us, as Regina is very selective about which memoirs she takes on due to the competitiveness of the memoir market.

I understand that this selectivity can be frustrating, especially considering our submission guidelines. Whether or not we ultimately take on their project, we do appreciate every author who takes the time to craft a proposal in-line with our specifications.

We discussed your concerns and, in light of your suggestion, Regina plans (if possible) to modify our listing to indicate her heightened selectivity when it comes to memoir queries. That way, authors can make a more informed decision before undertaking submission to Regina Ryan Books. She thanks you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Again, we apologize for any difficulties and we wish you the best of luck in the querying process.

Best,
Katherine St George, Assistant to Regina Ryan

I'm not sure that this agent reads the queries. She rejected mine saying she does not represent fiction. My book is not fiction, nor did I say it is.

Anyone get a response yet? I think I might need to nudge soon, but the thought of nudging is a frightening one!

Update: I nudged a few days ago and today (3/11/14) got a form rejection. I get the feeling that I just got lost in the mix. Ah well. Onward!

Erik- I sent mine on 10/4 with no response yet. I know with fiction, you aren't supposed to nudge for 6 months when the agent has your full. If they gave you a 3-4 week time line and it's been 2 months, I would say it's safe to nudge. I don't believe I was given a timeline.

Two hours later I received a request for full book proposal, two sample chapters, copy of original query letter and was given a 3-4 week time frame RE: response.

Proposal and chapters sent 10/7/13. At 5 weeks now and no response. What should I do?
