I received a personal reply within an hour of my query: "Tom: I’m not taking on any new clients at this time, but I’ve shared your query with my agents and if one is interested, they’ll email you for the materials. Thanks."

SHe's the boss, so I'll score that as a recommendation to her colleagues. Fingers crossed.

Sharlene Martin is an amazing agent and agency. She cares deeply for her clients and really "goes to the mat" for them. When she was actively, and successfully representing my book, it felt like she never slept. She did not stop looking for publishers until she found two: Grove Press and Macmillan. If you are fortunate to land this agency, you are in very good hands.

Thank you for your query and the opportunity to read your work. Unfortunately, I feel that your submission isn’t quite right for my list at this time, and I regret that I am unable to take you on as a client.

I review every submission personally and this decision was made based on a number of factors, including this submission’s fit with my current interests. While this may be disheartening, please remember that not every agent is a fit for every writer. I hope you continue your publishing pursuits, and I wish you the very best.

Sharlene referred my Query to Delia Berrigan who responded with a very gracious and kind rejection letter. This project did not fit their needs at this time.

At least she was fast. Form letter, and for what it's worth, her form has become a lot more polite than what people have reported in the past.

Gave me her book and told me to write my query to her standard and resubmit. I did with 72 hours. Conveniently another of her client is writing the same book I am. Not sure if this process was for me to buy her book(?) or what. After I thanked her she was condescending.

@Mimsy811
Same thing just happened to me.
Great comment.
Thanks.

Really condescending form letter rejection, including this line: "It pains me to know that quite often writers, in their zest for publication, overlook some of the most obvious tips to catching an agent’s eye and getting one step closer to their dream." Wow. Lucky for me, I had an offer yesterday.
