- QT: Can you tell us a little bit about the book for which you've found representation? What inspired you to write it?
- Jess Law:
GLAMOUR is an adult romantasy that blends workplace tension, fae intrigue, and a rivals-to-lovers romance. It follows Evie Blackwood, a human investigator at the Fae Research Institute, who is forced to work with Ashton Walen—a too-beautiful, too-arrogant co-worker whose mask is beginning to crack. As they’re thrown together on a dangerous case, Evie becomes the one person who can see past his magic… and the facade he’s spent years perfecting. At its heart, the story explores the “glamour” we all hold up as humans and the personas we craft to be accepted, to feel safe, and what it costs to let someone see underneath.
The inspiration honestly hit me in the most ordinary way. I was standing in a busy Sydney train station, people everywhere, and my brain—being the daydreamy, romantasy-obsessed creature it is—just went ‘Huh…Imagine a fae in this world?’
I’d been devouring office romances and romantasy at the time, and thought: Why not fuse the two? Why not take the tension and intimacy of a workplace dynamic and give it a magical edge? - QT: How long have you been writing?
- Jess Law:
I started writing when I was 14! Right in the height of the Divergent and Maze Runner era, when two of my best friends and I attempted a three-POV dystopian novel. It was chaotic, overly dramatic, and absolutely terrible… but it lit something in me.
Later, I fell into fanfiction and readers kept telling me I should pursue writing professionally. Still, life took me in other directions for a while. I studied music and teaching, took a few creative writing classes along the way. It wasn’t until two years ago, as an adult, that I finally came back to writing with intention, and I’m so glad I did. It feels like returning to the part of myself that’s been waiting patiently this whole time. - QT: How long have you been working on this book?
- Jess Law:
On and off for about nine months. I started drafting it last year but paused when I fell pregnant. I picked it back up during my maternity leave, and it’s been growing alongside this new chapter of my life, which has made finishing it feel especially meaningful. - QT: Was there ever a time you felt like giving up, and what helped you to stay on course?
- Jess Law:
Absolutely. Life, work, and especially having a baby created long stretches where writing felt impossible. But I had this really strong feeling about GLAMOUR—that it was a story worth telling. Even when I had to step away, the characters and the world kept tugging me back. - QT: Is this your first book?
- Jess Law:
Not at all! I actually wrote a high-fantasy duology before GLAMOUR. I love those books, but I didn’t feel they were quite the right fit for a debut in terms of marketability. I might return to them one day as they still have a special place in my heart, but writing them taught me so much about craft. I worked with a developmental editor on the first book, and that experience was invaluable. All of that learning ultimately shaped the writer I became when I sat down to draft GLAMOUR. - QT: Do you have any formal writing training?
- Jess Law:
I minored in English during my study and took a few creative writing units during that degree. - QT: Do you follow a writing routine or schedule?
- Jess Law:
Nope! Not at all. I simply write when the mood strikes and when I have time! - QT: How many times did you re-write/edit your book?
- Jess Law:
A fair few times. I didn’t count exactly how many but upwards of 5 drafts and edits total! - QT: Did you have beta readers for your book?
- Jess Law:
I had two beta readers from a Goodreads group. - QT: Did you outline your book, or do you write from the hip?
- Jess Law:
I had an overarching structure and messily planned my plot points. - QT: How long have you been querying for this book? Other books?
- Jess Law:
About two months! I’d queried briefly with my previous high-fantasy project, but I only sent out a handful of submissions before realising it probably wasn’t the right book to debut with. - QT: About how many query letters did you send out for this book?
- Jess Law:
A lot… 178 in total! I sent them out over a couple of months, refining slightly as I went. - QT: Did you tailor each query to the specific agent, and if so, how?
- Jess Law:
I did. I looked at their MSWL, website, publishers marketplace and interviews if available, and added in a line to the top of my query letter. - QT: What advice would you give other writers seeking agents?
- Jess Law:
I really think that doing your research is so important. Research different query letter templates and look up how to write a synopsis. Most importantly, don’t give up! I never expected to land an agent and ended up with 5 offers of representation.
Query Letter:
Dear ________,
I am seeking representation for a completed _____word rivals-to-lovers romantasy. I read you are seeking _________________________ and I'm hoping you might find just that in _______.
Evie Blackwood is determined to prove herself at the Fae Research Institute, if only her infuriatingly brilliant rival, Ashton Walen, would stop undermining her at every turn. When they're assigned to investigate a string of supernatural disappearances, their rivalry deepens but so does their attraction. But everything Evie thinks she knows about Ashton unravels the night his glamour slips, revealing something otherworldly beneath his polished façade. As Evie digs deeper, she discovers Ashton's secret: he's not just fae, but a prince exiled for siding with the humans. To stop the disappearances and survive Ashton's vengeful brother who seeks to take over the fae realm, Evie and Ashton must join forces. Yet trust between rivals is fragile, and resisting the pull between them may be the hardest battle of all.
Told through the perspective of a hilarious, witty and ambitious investigator, ________ is a slow-burn romance with fae intrigue, and workplace tension. It will appeal to readers of My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine, Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, by Heather Fawsett.
I hold a Bachelor of _____, where I minored in ______ and studied creative writing, and a _________ from ________. For the past five years, I have taught Music and English, alongside building a thriving BookTok platform, @readwithjessg, where I connect daily with readers.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
