Always verify publisher's information before sending your query. Verify the publisher's query preferences, contact information, genres of interest, and if the publisher is still open to queries.

Although QueryTracker tries to stay current, it is not always easy. Never trust any single source for publisher information (and yes, this includes QueryTracker).

Review the user comments for more information, and always follow exactly what it says on the publisher's website.

I've been sending a memoir out for almost a year now and most of the response I've gotten has affirmed the quality of the writing and indicated that memoirs, unless you are a celebrity, are a hard sell. I got a very quick rejection from Behler. I've gotten a ton of these and have become pretty thick skinned and businesslike about it. This rejection was surprisingly harsh and really stung. Caveat emptor!

Dear Sam,
Thank you for your query. Your story sounds dramatic, but I’m afraid we’re not the right publisher for this particular book. Best of luck to you.

ER 1/13/2012 - very nice and good input for why it didn't work for her, but bummer anyway. Oh, well...
