Got a rejection. Though they said I had an exciting premise so I guess that's good?

My rejection letter. They were really kind about it.

Dear,

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to send us A Face Without a Heart – we really appreciate your interest.

We're very aware of the hard work and effort that has gone into your submission and think you are a talented writer with an interesting premise. However, after careful consideration, we don't feel that A Face Without a Heart is quite right for us at Bookouture.

Unfortunately, due to the number of submissions we receive and the size of our team, we are unable to give more detailed feedback. Whilst we're not able to accept re-submissions for manuscripts that we've already viewed, please do keep us in mind for any future manuscripts.

Once again, our genuine thanks for your submission. We wish you the very best for your future success.

Best regards,

The Bookouture Pitch Team

You cannot make an honest assessment of what the publishing industry has become amidst the glut of materials that have hit the market since the pandemic without using the word "asshole" more times than a civilized person wants. Against that backdrop, I must express appreciation for Ruth Tross, who took the time to write at least a few original sentences, words that say she read some portion of the matterial. In a way, it's sad the industry is so pathetic it makes her professionalism stand out all the more, but that's not her fault and she deserves credit for making a genuine effort. This is what she had to say:

"We're very aware of the hard work and effort that has gone into your submission and think you have an interesting premise. However, after careful consideration, we don't feel that The Hodin Cabal: Choices is quite right for us at Bookouture. It's an arresting thriller with a terrifying and intriguing underlying story, but in the end it's the kind of more political action thriller that we have found doesn't appeal to a huge number of our readers. Whilst we're not able to accept re-submissions for manuscripts that we've already viewed, please do keep us in mind for any future manuscripts."

No author enjoys a rejection, but it is a lot nicer when someone chooses not to be ugly or dismissive about it.
